New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…
Original story (published on December 8, 2020) follows:
The first MIUI 12 build came out towards the end of April 2020. This was limited to the Chinese market, with the global market joining the party about a month later.
At the time, Xiaomi announced an official list of devices that would receive the update to MIUI 12 and among them were the Redmi 7, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and the Redmi Y3.
Of course, given their price segment and the fact that they already had newer successors ahead of them in the MIUI 12 queue, it was almost inevitable that the update would arrive towards the end of the year.
We even got wind of alleged MIUI 12 release date for devices in the Redmi 7 and Redmi 6 series, among others. As per the timeline, the Redmi 7 and Redmi 6 were scheduled to bag MIUI 12 update in October.
More than two months later, the story has taken a nasty twist. According to Xiaomi, there will be no MIUI 12 update for the Redmi 7, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi Y3.
Please note that the following device models originally included in MIUI 12 release schedule won’t be updated to MIUI 12 due to compatibility and performance issues: Redmi Y3, Redmi 7, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6
The company goes on to state that compatibility and performance issues are at the heart of this decision, but it doesn’t give details of the exact issues in question.
Both the Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7 have Android 9 Pie pre-installed, but only the latter has been upgraded to Android 10 in select regions. The update to MIUI 12 would have been the second update to the in-house skin.
Now that Xiaomi has shelved MIUI 12 update plans for the Redmi 7 and Redmi Y3, it remains to be seen what the future holds for these two devices, especially when it comes to MIUI 13 update.
Also, it doesn’t look good for the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A devices. For some reason, MIUI 12 update is still heading to the Redmi 6 Pro, Redmi 7A and Redmi Y2, devices that have a thing or two to do with the four in this piece.
Going forward, it looks like the Redmi 7, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi Y3 will only receive security updates, bug fixes and optimizations based on MIUI 11, perhaps without even a switch to Android 10 for the Y3.
On the brighter side, you can hardly be short of cool custom ROMs for these devices, promising some new features from the latest Android OS versions and then some. However, these are unofficial builds.
Too bad for those who have been eying the update for months now. We will keep an eye on the situation and update this story just in case anything useful comes up.
