Things haven’t exactly been smooth-sailing with the update scenario of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series. The lineup, namely the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, Redmi Note 9 Pro, and the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has already suffered plenty of delays with Android 11.

For example, the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Pro Max did receive the Android 11 update back in early 2021. However, the update was rolled out to select users only following which it was halted and then delayed for months.

Thankfully, with the onset of May, several devices from the series including the Redmi Note 9, Redmi Note 9 Pro Global, and the Redmi Note 9 4G got treated to Android 11, indicating that development is indeed underway.

But the update dilemma is far from over. You see, the entire Redmi Note 9 series booted into MIUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box which means that it is not only eligible for MIUI 12.5 but also for Android 12.

Of course, Android 12 is still under development so thinking about it right now would be way too early. However, MIUI 12.5 did have an expected release date given out by none other than Xiaomi themselves – late Q2 2021.

But June has now made way for July, signalling the end of the second quarter, and there is still no sign of any MIUI 12.5 for the entirety of the global Redmi Note 9 series.

Heck, even the older Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi Note 7 Pro which were released almost two years ago and are nearing the end of their software support life, recently got treated to MIUI 12.5 in China.

It is unclear what is causing the hold-up but it seems that the very problems that delayed the release of Android 11 are now delaying MIUI 12.5.

A moderator has acknowledged the delay saying that while the MIUI 12.5 update for the Redmi Note 9 series was indeed initially scheduled for late Q2, it seems we will have to ‘wait a bit more’ now.

A precise ETA hasn’t been provided but we can expect it to roll out in China this month, considering that much older devices like the Mi Max 3 have already bagged the update. Although one can’t be too sure.

And if a China update goes live sometime this month, a global rollout would only commence several weeks later.

That said, we will continue tracking the MIUI 12.5 update status for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series so stay tuned to our dedicated tracker for the same.
