Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro MIUI 12 update enables support for AptX codecs

The Redmi Note 8 Pro was first unveiled back in September 2019 and despite having been succeeded by the Redmi Note 9 Pro and its siblings, it remains a solid choice for users looking for a capable mid-range device that won’t break the bank.

The device came with Android 9 Pie out of the box with MIUI 11 on top. It has since been updated to Android 10 and Xiaomi’s new skin on top of Android, MIUI 12.

When the Redmi Note 8 Pro launched, it did support a number of contemporary Bluetooth audio codecs including SBC, AAC, and LDAC. These allowed users to stream high-quality Bluetooth content to their supported Bluetooth headsets.

Conspicuously missing from that list of codecs were AptX, AptX HD, and AptX Adaptive. This, despite these codecs appearing in the device’s Developer Options as being supported. According to reviews, the Note 8 Pro did not ship with the required libraries to support this codec.

Well, all that seems to have changed with the recent update to MIUI 12. Users who have updated their Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro devices to MIUI 12 note that their devices now support this family of proprietary audio codec compression algorithms owned by Qualcomm.

I don’t know how they managed to do this, but my BT headphones are finally connecting (to Redmi Note 8 Pro) with AptX 🙂

This is a very welcome addition, especially for users who have fully moved to wireless audio as AptX offers users one of the best Bluetooth audio performance in the industry today, provided you own a pair of supported earphones.

Redmi Note 8 Pro users who were holding out from purchasing those AptX supported headphones can now confidently make the purchase knowing they they will work just fine with their device.

We can only hope that more and more OEMs borrow a leaf from Xiaomi and roll out user-facing features in their updates.
