Xiaomi has got to be one of the most developer-friendly OEMs we have today. A quick scroll through the developer forums like XDA and you will come across dozens of threads for various Custom ROMs, tweaks and custom Kernels for many Xiaomi devices.
This is partly due to the chipset that Xiaomi put in its devices, mostly Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, which are relatively more developer-friendly. Also, Xiaomi often releases the kernel source code for its devices to the public.
Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 Pro, released back in August 2019, remains one of the most popular Xiaomi devices in current times in many regions. And for good reason. The device continues Xiaomi Redmi Note tradition by offering relatively powerful specs, a decent-looking package and a price that is reasonable to many.
The device launched with Android 9 Pie and has since been updated by the Chinese OEM to Android 10. Following the roll out of this update, Xiaomi is making it easier for third-party developers to develop aftermarket Android 10 firmware for the Redmi Note 8 Pro.
The company has today made available the device’s Android 10 kernel source code. With this, custom ROM makers like Paranoid Android, Pixel Experience, LineageOS and many more, can begin making more stable firmware for this device.
The kernel source code is available publicly on Xiaomi’s GitHub page.
While this unfolds, a section of Redmi Note 8 Pro users have pointed out an issue where the device reboots into recovery mode on its own. According to the affected users, the device would be in the pocket and later on, it would be found in recovery mode.
Affected users indicate that they have been facing this issue while running on Android 9 Pie on their Redmi Note 8 Pro devices. It is unclear whether this issue is fixed in the Android 10 update. There’s still no official word from Xiaomi on this issue.
