One area where Apple’s iOS beats Android hands down is when it comes to how long devices are supported. For context, the upcoming iOS 14 will run on devices as old as the 2015 iPhone 6s. On Android, you’ll be lucky to get more than two major OS upgrades.
Android 11 will be available for Google’s devices launched after 2017, with the Pixel 2 family of devices being the oldest in the list of officially supported devices. However, the same can not be said about other OEMs.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S was first unveiled back in 2018. A true flagship at the time, the device came packed with the best that Xiaomi had to offer and the internals matched its stunning exterior. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 ensured that this device went toe to toe with the best devices at the time.
A little over two years into the device’s life and it is finally on its last leg. The device is still in line for an update to MIUI 12 based on Android 10 so users should at least look forward to that.
Sadly, it turns out that Android 10 is the last major build of Android that the Mi Mix 2S will officially get as Android 11 for the device is not on the cards. This is according to Xiaomi Firmware Updater, an open-source community project that provides firmware packages for Xiaomi devices.
This comes as no surprise as the device was launched in 2018 running Android 8 Oreo. It has since been updated to Android 9 Pie and Android 10 so it has seen two major OS upgrades already.
Even while that happens, the Mi Mix 2S remains quite popular in the developer community and chances are that the device will still get updated to Android 11, albeit unofficially.
In the recent past, we have seen the Mi Mix 2S get an official build of Paranoid Android based on Android 10 and a new stable build of TWRP.
In future, we can only hope that Android devices get longer official support from their respective OEMs. This is a tall order seeing as Android phonemakers often have a larger pool of devices to update and support, unlike Apple whose catalog increases by two or three new devices each year.
