New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on Marh 25, 2021) follows:

Android 12 was announced in February 2021 for developers. Google will be releasing several updates to the developer preview channel before making the OS available for public beta testing.

Like others before it, Android 12 beta is expected to go public in Q2. Of course, there’s still no exact date, but you can expect it somewhere around May 2021.

The past couple or so Android iterations saw Xiaomi and other non-Google vendors join the testing program around this time. And we expect nothing different come this May.

Whether Samsung will finally take part in the early Android 12 beta testing instead of waiting until later in the year to begin one of its own still remains a mystery.

But what seems certain is Xiaomi making the early Android 12 build available for some of its premium devices so that app developers can get down to business.

Nothing is official at this point, but our history with covering Xiaomi software updates gives us an edge, meaning we are in a position to predict some things regarding the company’s Android 12 update plans.

Xiaomi Android 12 update eligible devices

Xiaomi is arguably the most active Android vendor when it comes to releasing new devices as well as software development.

On top of unveiling a new device just about every month, Xiaomi also rolls out daily and weekly updates to devices sold in China via its MIUI beta testing program.

The huge device repository is good and all for racking in more money, but it becomes a problem when software development comes into the picture. On the brighter side, Xiaomi is no slouch on this front.

As far as Android 12 update is concerned, there’s a long list of devices we think Xiaomi will be upgrading to the new OS when the time comes.

For now, though, nothing is confirmed. But we can tell you for sure that all Xiaomi devices that come pre-installed with Android 11 are indeed eligible for an update to Android 12.

That said, the contents of this article are a result of studying past patterns and history of Xiaomi Android OS updates that we have been keeping tabs on for years. We will update the article when official info comes out.

NOTE:

1. Xiaomi’s Mi series of devices receive two major Android OS updates.
2. The Redmi Note series used to get one OS update, but things seem to have changed beginning with the Redmi Note 8 series.
3. The budget Redmi series (non-Note) only gets one OS update.
4. Poco is now an independent brand, you can check out Android 12 status for Poco devices here.

With that out of the way, below are Xiaomi devices (Mi and Redmi) we think are guaranteed an upgrade to Android 12 update officially.

– Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra

– Xiaomi Redmi Note 10
– Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G

As noted earlier, Xiaomi may have changed its software update policy with regards to the Redmi Note series. The Note 8 and Note 8 Pro have recently received their second OS update to Android 11.

If this is the new trend, it means devices in the Redmi Note 9 series are also in line for their second OS update to Android 12. Granted, these devices should get the nod:

That means this article will see regular updates from time to time whenever we have new arrivals. We’ll also keep track of other Xiaomi Android 12 update developments and update this story so stay tuned.

Expected release date

As noted, Xiaomi has been a mainstay in Google’s recent early beta testing programs, however, the official rollout of the stable OS usually takes months to begin.

Granted, the same is likely to be the case, where early Android 12 builds might be released in Q2 before the public beta follows soon after Google releases the stable version for Pixels in late August or early September.

As for the availability of the stable version, expect the first Xiaomi devices to bag the OS somewhere in Q4 2021, which will be in line with previous Android 11 and Android 10 releases.
