X11 on iOS 13 spotted, getting Linux for iPhone/iPad not Herculean task anymore

Migrating to iOS from Android is tiresome. I am not exaggerating! iPhones don’t stand a chance when it comes to the diversified customisation options Android devices offer. To go along with that, Play Store has tons of applications to cater to users’ needs.

Speaking of iOS, it’s the other way around! Apple wants to make their platform so closed that they never allow the customers to personalise all the predetermined choices. In case someone is dying to change the defaults, they will have to go with jailbreaking.

Have you ever thought of running other operating systems (Linux for example) on iOS? Considering the locked filesystem of iPhone/iPad, you might not believe it’s possible. But a Reddit post we spotted today hints at the possibility of making it a reality one day.

A person could successfully run X11 (X window system) on iOS 13. Don’t know what it is! Well, the X Window System (X11, or simply X) is a windowing system for bitmap displays, common on Unix-like operating systems.

All Linux destros use this as a basic framework for graphical user interface environment. So, getting X11 to work on iOS 13 is a massive step towards having the whole OS. Nonetheless, you need to know that chances are less for it to happen too soon.

Do you think you can replace the whole user interface with Linux or any other platform? I hate to bust your bubble! But, the secondary OS stays inside an app and you get to stream it locally over VNC. The developer says nothing will stop someone from changing that.

Moreover, for those who look forward to getting GNOME, it hasn’t been achieved yet. Despite trying, the person behind all these is facing a troubling bug in fontconfig and/or freetype. And, we will update this story if he comes up with a new progress in this affair.
