Update (July 10): We’re receiving reports that the update is now hitting Pixel 2 XL units as well. Let us know in comments below is you’re still not able to see it.
Original story follows:
Although it has been a week since Google started pushing out this month’s security patch to Pixels and Nexuses, we are seeing reports that reflect the July update hasn’t yet landed on a very large number of Google Pixel 2 XL units (irrespective of their region and carrier).
Complaints are pouring on the company’s official help forum (1,2,3,4,5), Reddit (1,2,3,4,5), and other platforms, including micro-blogging site Twitter (1,2,3) as well.
What complainants say
Take a look at how some of those affected word the matter:
Seems like the people with Pixel 2 XLs are not receiving the update. I’m one of them- AT&T and phone bought from Google. My girlfriend has a regular Pixel 2 on Verizon and received her update a few days ago. I wonder if its anything 2 XL specific that is holding off this rollout.
My wife who is having a pixel 2 received the update 2 days back so not very sure what’s the issue with my pixel 2 xl. Normally we both receive the update on the same day.
My Pixel 2Xl has not yet received the security update for july’18. My family member who is having pixel 2 has already received the update for July security patch. Not sure what’s the issue.
Curiously, even the ‘Check for updates‘ button is reportedly not showing any new update, triggering speculations whether the roll out has been suspended.
The “Check for updates” button is not working at this time to manually pull the July 2018 security patch. Since Google fixed this back in feb 2018, I have been able to hit the button on the day of security patch releases and pull down the update immediately however this month it keeps telling me there are no updates available. There are several others around the internet that have commented on this as well.
Check for updates not bringing the update for me either, it has brought it straight away since February or so every month as soon as the patches are live, Now it just says I’m up to date on June 5th patch.
The check for updates still shows upto date. But my security patch is on June 5th.
While users continue complaining, one of the Top Contributors on Pixel help forum has been suggesting that the update may take weeks to arrive, which is technically correct, but unusual in case of Pixel phones.
Google uses a staggered release for Android updates; a small percentage of devices receive the update each day until it finally reaches all devices. This approach allows Google to monitor for any issues which may be inadvertently caused by the update before every device is impacted. As a result it may take a few weeks for every device to receive the update.
This doesn’t indicate a problem or an issue, it’s just the update process working as intended. Hang in there and you should get the update in the coming days.
The above statement doesn’t even indicate that there’s a problem. But the fact remains a large number of users haven’t yet got the update, and they are categorically saying this is not normal.
It’s worth stressing that Google forum Top Contributors aren’t company employees, so they may not have up to date information all the time. If there’s indeed no issue, we hope Google speeds up the update circulation process, as a lot of users are complaining.
Meanwhile, those of you tired of waiting can side load the July OTA (just like many other Pixel 2XL users), but at your own risk.
