So this new year, popular wireless communications brand Virgin Mobile (owned by Sprint) has begun to notify its US customers through a text message that the service is discontinuing, as a result of which the existing customer accounts will now be transferred to the company’s sister brand – Boost Mobile.

VriginMobile USA is ending and your account will auto-transfer to Boost Mobile
Before you even think, this ain’t a hoax.
This sudden notification has, of course, got users worried and questioning about the service’s closure. Reverting back to some such customers, the official Twitter support of Virgin Mobile USA (as mentioned on the handle) has also confirmed the closure news while reverting back to some of the users.
Here’s what VirginMobileUSA Care (@VMUCare) has to say:
Virgin Mobile USA service will be discontinued, and we are happy to announce that most of the existing Virgin Mobile customers will be transferred to our sister brand, Boost Mobile.
The message being floated to the users also contains a link that takes them to an FAQ page (on the official site) to answer all user queries related to this Virgin Mobile (VM) account transfer to Boost Mobile which is going to take place in the coming month, i.e. February.
The changes that users may get to see during the migration process are as follows:
First of all, payments through PayPal account will no more be supported on your new Boost Mobile account. “Paypal will be removed as a registered payment vehicle 4-5 days prior to the migration date.”
Secondly, the existing VM customers who have enrolled for the 45/90 Day top-up payment option will need to re-establish the payment option, as Boost Mobile does not accept this payment option. Not to miss, the AutoPay service (for those enrolled), will continue to work as it is, even after migration.
Coming to whether your monthly payment amount will remain the same or not, VM says, “you will be transferred to a comparable service plan at no extra cost to you. In fact, since Boost Mobile accounts have taxes and fees included, customers will end up paying less than you do now on similar plans.”
For the rest of the FAQs, you may take a read of the official document here. As to why Virgin Mobile USA is being discontinued all of a sudden, well, there’s no exact reason shared by the company as yet. All they have to say is:
We appreciate your loyalty. To ensure that we offer the best service to our customers, we regularly examine our plans. At this time a decision to discontinue the Virgin Mobile USA service has been made. As we are committed to providing you with great service, we will transfer your account to our sister brand Boost Mobile.
But as you all may know about the Sprint and T-Mobile merger, this shutdown could be a preparatory step by Sprint.
