New update alert: Verizon Moto G7 Play & KYOCERA DuraForce PRO 2, Galaxy Note 8 & S20 5G, Realme X50 Pro & Sony Xperia 1 II

It is always exciting to get a new update on your device. This is because any update to your phone aims to make it better. Be it through feature addition, bug fixes or general system security enhancement.

A number of OEMs have been hard at work building and pushing out updates to their devices. Today, we have a roundup of some of these updates that should be rolling out to a device near you.

First up is the Verizon variant of the Motorola Moto G7 Play. This device is getting its 5th update on the carrier, this time, getting updated to the June 2020 Android security patch. The software update started rolling out on June 22 and can be identified by the software version number PDYS29.105-165-16.

This update brings little else in terms of features as indicated by the changelog below.

Also getting updated to the June security patch is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 on Verizon. This update bumps the software version on this device up to PPR1.180610.011.N950USQS7DTE5.

Just like the Motorola G7 Play, the changelog for this build for the Verizon Galaxy Note 8 looks very slim as the update packs little more than just a bump in the system’s security patch level. The patch is already rolling out so you might want to check for the update on your Verizon Note 8 device.

Unlike the two updates from Verizon that didn’t bring much else other than a security patch, this next update is packed! And the update is going out to the Realme X50 Pro.

Realme X50 Pro/Player Edition (China) is getting updated to the June security patch. This update brings multiple fixes and the accompanying changelog is equally extensive.

This update is also rolling out to eligible devices but in true Realme fashion, this is a staged rollout and so, it will be rolled out gradually. As such, it might be a while before your Realme X50 Pro gets the update. Keep checking for updates on your device so you don’t miss it when it is available for your unit.

The next device that is getting an update is the KYOCERA DuraForce PRO 2, also on Verizon. The DuraForce PRO 2 was first released back in 2018 running Android 8 Oreo out of the box but has been updated pretty consistently since.

This rugged, utilitarian-looking device has since received 13 updates through its life on Verizon, and today, the carrier is adding one more update to the device, this time, the May & June 2020 security patches.

The update which was released on June 17, bears software version number 4.400VZ. The changelog for this update hints to little more than just a regular security patch so users shouldn’t expect anything radically different.

Verizon is also rolling out an update to Samsung’s current flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G. This update brings the latest June 2020 security patch to this device.

This update can be identified by its software version number QP1A.190711.020.G981VSQU1ATEA. The update started rolling out to eligible devices on June 3 and it is probably available to download now.

The next device that is getting updated is the recently-released Sony Xperia 1 II. Users have reported receiving an update on their Xperia 1 II devices that brings with it software build number 58.0.A.A31. According to users, the new update brings Wi-Fi calling to the units.

It is also encouraging to see carriers and even obscure OEMs managing to roll out updates to their devices. All this points to an ecosystem that is mature and security-oriented. We can only hope that this trend continues.
