It is well known that Samsung’s track record is poor when it comes to providing updates on regular basis. However, last year, the company made a promise that it will provide regular security updates to unlocked models of its smartphones.

Cut to now, and even users of the company’s flagship models are complaining about complete lack of updates.

Ask those who own an unlocked Galaxy S9 or S9+ in the US, and you’ll get to know their units are still on the February patch level. Yes, that’s the same security patch with which these devices launched. So much for the promise, Samsung?

From Twitter to Reddit to XDA to even the Korean company’s own official forums, there are complaints everywhere. Users aren’t happy, and rightly so – you can’t ask people to pay around $800 for phones that don’t even come with a guarantee of monthly security updates.

Ask someone at Samsung – their forum moderators, PR guys, or support staff – and they’ll tell you the same old story that updates for unlocked devices are to be tested with all major carriers, and hence they get delayed sometimes.

Fine, but so much delay? It’s May now, which means unlocked units are three months behind carrier variants. That’s a whole quarter Samsung, and we’re talking about security on your premium, flagship models.

Clearly, Samsung’s post sales experience – at-least in case of the Galaxy S9 – has gone downhill for a large number of users. The company delayed the fix for calling issues to the point that it got slapped with a lawsuit in Israel, and now, in the US, something as basic as monthly updates are missing for unlocked models ever since the devices launched.

Not related to Galaxy S9, but it’s worth noting here that Samsung has already been dragged to court in the Netherlands over software updates. So, is another lawsuit coming? Only time will tell.
