U.S. carriers T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint & AT&T Android 12 update tracker: List of supported or eligible devices, release date and more

Most Android smartphone vendors have already rolled out the Android 11 update for over fifty percent of eligible devices from their portfolios.

Matter of fact, a report in December highlighted the fact that Android 11 has the fastest adoption rate of any version yet.

While that’s indeed good news, there are still some bottlenecks in the way Android updates are released to the public, and smartphone carriers are one of them, possibly even the biggest bottlenecks of all.

Carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile first test system updates independently before giving OEMs the green light to send out software updates to their phones.

This adds an extra layer of work which results in updates being delivered to carrier-locked units later than unlocked models in some cases, as seen with the Android 11 rollout in the U.S.

That said, Google is now on the verge of kick-starting the Android 12 beta program, making Android 11 seem like a relic of the past.

This means that carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint (now part of the Magenta carrier) will be responsible for testing Android 12 for devices before they give OEMs the nod to push the update to users.

So in this article, we’ll be keeping tabs on all developments surrounding the availability of Android 12 from the major U.S. carriers — U.S. T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint & AT&T.

While carriers do play a role in the rollout of software updates, OEMs are the ones responsible for developing and planning rollout schedules.

This means smartphone brands such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, and OnePlus that sell devices through carriers in the U.S. will be responsible for the availability of Android 12 for their devices.

That said, Google is expected to release the Android 12 beta this month and will continue testing the new Android OS until the end of August or early September after which it will release the stable update.

Hence, we can expect to see OEMs along with carriers start rolling out the update towards the end of the year. But we’ll simply have to wait and see.

Not all carriers in the U.S. sell the same smartphones. Hence, each carrier has a slightly different set of devices that are — or at least should be — eligible for the update to Android 12.
