Update (September 03): We’re still seeing reports that problem hasn’t been fixed. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates whenever available.
Update (April 25):
Going by latest reports, the WiFi problem continues to persist. Even a member from Sony Staff confirmed the same saying
We understand that the improvements we introduced did not resolve the behavior for everyone. We will keep investigating in order to provide further improvements.
Here’s a users shared video showcasing the WiFi issue on their Xperia XZ1 unit.
Original story:
While Xperia devices are fraught with bugs (just like smartphones from other manufacturers), what’s good is Sony has been actively acknowledging concerning problems and fixing them as well. In line with this, the company recently confirmed random WiFi disconnection/drops issue with its Xperia XZ1 and XZ Premium phones, and will be addressing it in the next software release.
The confirmation about the WiFi glitch came from Emir (Official Sony Xperia Support Staff) on a couple of Sony forum threads discussing the matter in question. Emir not only acknowledged the problem, but also updated that that same will be fixed (hopefully that’s what they meant by ‘improved’) in an upcoming software update.
You might experience that your phone sometimes loses the Wi-Fi connection and you need to restart the phone to get it reconnected. This is known and will be improved in the next software release. The affected software versions are 47.1.A.12.34 or earlier on Android 8.0
For a quick refresher, affected Xperia XZ1/XZ Premium users report WiFi on their units drops randomly, and rebooting the device is the only option to re-establish the connection.
If we go by the threads on which Emir acknowledged the problem, Xperia XZ1 users started complaining about random WiFi disconnections after receiving the January security update (build no. 47.1.A.12.34), although we can confirm the problem was being reported prior to that as well.
Those with XZ Premium devices, on the other hand, have been reporting the issue since June 2017. Of course, the problem affects Xperia XZ1 Compact units as well.
Coming back to the fix, we assume the next update (probably the March one) will take care of the aforementioned WiFi issue, as the February security update (which pushed the build no. to 47.1.A.12.75) is already out. Rest assured, we’ll let you know as and when the issue gets fixed, so keep a tab here.
