Sony is one of the first OEMs to release the Android 11 update to all eligible devices from its portfolio. Of course, the company didn’t have many eligible devices to begin with, but it’s a good sign nevertheless.

The update first rolled out to the flagship Sony Xperia 1 II, however, was seemingly halted due to bugs and then began rolling out again.

Even so, the update is yet to be released in all regions so that’s something the smartphone maker has to improve upon.

Now, as Android 11 is steadily rolling out for the Sony Xperia 1 II, Xperia 10 II, Xperia 5 II, Xperia 1, and Xperia 5, some users have noticed that they no longer have the fingerprint option to unlock their phones or perform any other biometric authentication.

Same issue after update. Came here to see if others had the same problem. Screen unlock doesn’t register anything, no reaction. Every app that uses prints automatically defaults to another form of verification. Even in settings, there is no mention of fingerprint or biometrics, not even an option under “screen unlock”. I’ve got the same issue with Xperia 1. I installed 55.2.A.0.630 this morning and suddenly the fingerprint option is completely gone from the settings. (Source)

I’m on 55.1.A.12.18 on my Xperia 5 and the same thing is happening to me. My sensor doesn’t work at all sometimes. In the settings it either doesn’t show up that I have a sensor available, or it does, but when I go into that menu and use my fingerprints there’s no response on the phone. (Source)

It’s worth pointing out that the issue does not appear to be affecting all users. Some claim that they can use the fingerprint option as usual.

Moreover, a few users say that the problem can be fixed by simply rebooting the device or rebooting into safe mode. The same workaround has also been shared by Sony.

The company officially acknowledged the fingerprint issue on Sony phones with Android 11 via a dedicated support article. In it, Sony has confirmed that they are working to fix the issue as soon as possible and shared a quick fix.

Unfortunately, Sony did not share any specifics regarding the availability of the fix. That said, we will keep track of the situation and will post an update once the fix starts rolling out.
