Google-owned YouTube Kids app is specifically designed for kids which makes it easier for children and parents to find the content that’s more appropriate.

It exists separately because of the fact that the main YouTube platform sometimes contains some dark corners.

Moreover, videos tagged as ‘made for kids’ also include some restrictions like disabled comments, personalized ads, branding watermarks, and more.

YouTube users want comments enabled on kids’ videos

But some users have noticed that comments are even turned off for kids’ videos that appear on the main YouTube platform.

I think it’s fine If a video is set to made for kids, but I wonder why they should disable the comments?

Users feel that there is no need to disable comments on the main platform as it doesn’t really have any direct interaction with the kids per se and a separate platform for them already exists.

But YouTube is still restricting comments for the content that is tagged as ‘made for kids’.

So, all users want is to simply comment on these videos for nostalgic reasons or reminisce about the past.

For instance, this SpongeBob video on YouTube (which is meant for kids) is available to watch on the main platform, but viewers can’t comment on it which is quite abysmal.

Reason behind disabling comments

It should be noted that various legal acts and rules work towards safeguarding children’s safety and interests.

YouTube also follows one such Act called the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule which states:

COPPA imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age.

This means that those who want the comments enabled probably shouldn’t expect much regarding this. But as always, we will be updating this space if and when we come across more information.
