Snapchat offers a few options to customize the overall look. In the past, we have already talked about 3D Bitmoji, dark mode and more.

Now, the platform’s devs have integrated a new wallpaper option that increases the possibilities. This allows eligible users to choose a custom background wallpaper for their chats or groups.

Here’s how to change the Snapchat background chat wallpaper

As you may have already noticed, we mentioned that ‘eligible’ users will be able to use the new Snapchat custom chat wallpaper. This is because it is not available to everyone.

To access the feature, you must be a Snapchat+ subscriber ($3.99 per month). Snapchat+ is a service that includes some exclusive features and early access to new ones.

As of today, it is not known if the custom Snapchat chat wallpaper will reach everyone in the future or if it will remain an exclusive Snapchat+ feature.

Once you are a Snapchat+ subscriber, you can change the wallpaper as follows:

  • Open a Friendship or Group Chat Profile
  • Tap ‘Wallpaper’ under “Our Chat”
  • Choose a wallpaper
  • Preview the wallpaper and decide if you want the image to be blurred or not
  • Tap ‘Confirm’ to change it!

If you want to remove the wallpaper to get the ‘vanilla look’, you can do it like this:

To clear a wallpaper, tap the trashcan icon in the top right of the preview or select the empty state in the Wallpaper selection view.

Some things to keep in mind

It’s worth pointing out that the wallpaper change will not just be for you. The other person in the conversation will also be able to see the custom wallpaper in question.

However, this hasn’t been the case for all users. Some are reporting that the Snapchat chat wallpaper set is only visible to them, but not to the other person.

I changed my wallpaper for one of my chats and I’m the only one that can see it so why does it say that my friend can also view the wallpaper when they can’t

Because of this, some are wondering if it is necessary to be a Snapchat+ subscriber to see the other person’s wallpaper too.

@snapchatsupport who can see the new wallpaper chat feature? Is it that Snapchat+ can set them but everyone can see?

Another point to note is that you cannot set a wallpaper for all your chats. You can only choose a wallpaper for one conversation/group at a time, making the process cumbersome if you want to customize all your chats.
