New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 23, 2020) follows:

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge duo had broken the record for receiving updates for over 4 years and while it had been thought that the update in May would be its last, Samsung has thrown in September security patch.

The Korean company typically provides its flagship phones with 2 years of Android updates and 4 years of security patches. However, Samsung crossed the limit with firstly the August update, and now this:

The update comes in the form of a 69MB September 2020 security patch. It is being rolled out in phases, and Canada and the UK seem to be the first ones getting it.

In Canada, all carrier variants have picked up this update, namely Videotron, Sasktel, EastLink, Telus, Koodo Mobile, Fido Mobile, Wind Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Bell, Rogers and even the unlocked variant.

All of them have the same firmware version G930W8VLS8CTI1 for the Galaxy S7 and version G935W8VLS8CTI1 for the S7 Edge.

The Exynos variants in the UK, however, has received this same update with a slightly changed firmware version: G93xFXXU8ETI2 and it can be downloaded from here.

So, as it stands, only the Canadian and UK variants of these devices have received the new September patch. None of the other variants, including those in the motherland, have picked up this update as of now.

Of course, this is an early phase of the rollout and we can soon expect other regions too to get the update as well.

It is also worth noting that 2 generations of Android OS updates on Samsung devices is a thing of the past now, with the OEM recently announcing that it will now provide 3 OS updates. You can read about that here and here.

By pulling this move, Samsung jumps into the same bandwagon as Google and OnePlus who are renowned for always providing 3 years worth of Android updates.

Finally, it can be concluded by saying that by providing updates like these, Samsung is leading with an example and thus posing a challenge to competing OEMs to also take care of their older devices.

If you reside in locations other than the UK and Canada, then please let us know in the comments below if you have received the S7 September security patch.
