This story is being continuously updated…. New updates are being added at the bottom…..
Original story (published on July 21, 2020) follows:
Rich Communication Service (RCS) is the spiritual successor to SMS. It promises far more versatility and many more features compared to what SMS can do today. Essentially, it is set to make SMS act more like iMessage, WhatsApp, or other Instant Messaging services.
The uptake of RCS has been a little slow owing to all the complexities that are needed to enable the feature. These include carrier support, OEM support and even a supported app.
Today, users of the Galaxy M31 in India are getting an update that is set to bring the latest July 2020 security patch. Along with the updated security patch, this update goes to improve system stability and add features.
Among the features that are coming with this update is the Glance feature and support for Rich Communication Service (RCS). According to the changelog, RCS is now enabled on the Galaxy M31 on Vodafone & Idea in India.
With this, the Galaxy M31 joins the growing list of Samsung devices that have recently been updated to support RCS. These include the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy A70.
Rich Communication Service (RCS) holds the potential to radically transform how we use messages, giving Android users a worthy competitor to iMessage that is very popular with iOS/iPhone users.
We can therefore only hope that more and more phone makers roll out support for RCS to their devices as that will go to build a much broader userbase for RCS thereby replacing SMS altogether.
One UI 2.1 for this device remains elusive but we shall continue to keep an eye on this and update as and when we get more information.
