Do you frequently get the “too many redirects” error while browsing genuine/trusted sites through Apple’s Safari web browser? Well, you aren’t alone, as it’s a known problem. Recently, Securly – a company that develops tools aimed at keeping kids safe online – published a support page claiming it’s Safari’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) feature that is to blame.
Securly says ITP can cause interruptions when a website uses an authentication service like Google. This in turn leads to the Web browser throwing the “Too many redirects” error. Here’s what team Securly exactly says:
This error occurs as Safari’s new ITP is blocking the authentication check between Google and services such as Securly. We were able to reproduce this issue on sites such as Google Drive and other sites using Google Single Sign-On authentication.
The team also reached out to Google in this regard, and received a similar confirmation. Here’s what Google said:
It is a known Safari issue that Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) can cause interruptions when a site uses an authentication service such as Google, which can lead to an error known as “Too many redirects”. For more information, please follow this official Apple Support article: https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT203370
While there’s no official fix for the issue at the moment, users can turn off the Prevent cross-site tracking feature in Safari – for details on how to do this, head here. Other workarounds include using the latest developer release of Safari (which disables the feature by default), or using some other web browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
