Xiaomi has a huge portfolio of smartphones and the Redmi Note 9 series is the OEMs’ this year’s offering which includes Note 9, Note 9 Pro, Note 9S, and Note 9 Pro Max. But there is a camera-specific issue with this lineup (excluding the Max variant, as we haven’t come across any reports yet) that has been troubling the buyers for quite some time now.

While earlier, the number was limited, it appears the matter is now catching heat with escalating reports. The problem in question? Dust particles manage to sneak past into the camera lens of these devices. Users basically complain the devices are dust magnet as the camera room isn’t airtight.

A couple of months back, a user who chimed the problem was told by the company executive Alvin Tse that only a few units were affected. They further added that manufacturers have been instructed to be careful. Here’s the exact statement:

For now only very small numbers of cases reported but we have asked factory to further tighten up the control. Service centres will be available to help with the few who face this issue

Though the number was limited earlier, over time, the reports have increased and hence the issue becomes worth highlighting. Moreover, now it’s coming to light that the problem is hardware related – more of a quality control issue – and those affected are being suggested to get a replacement.

Here’s what a forums moderator at Mi community has been telling the complainants recently:

It is a quality control issue. You may check with your retailer to get a replacement.

Kindly get a replacement. I have seen a few users reporting this back to back – it seems some issue with quality checks. There could be some gap in the camera module. I would suggest you to contact your seller to get a replacement.

So those of you who have been encountering dust/dirt in the camera lens of your Redmi Note 9, Note 9S & Note 9 Pro units, now you know the problem is hardware-related, and you can fetch a replacement. Do the needful in time. Though an official statement is yet to come, rest assured, we’ll be keeping a close watch and will keep you posted about the developments.
