Redmi Note 7/7S gets a taste of Android 12 Developer Preview 2 through an unofficial community build

Google is known for releasing new iterations of Android every year around September. This comes after an extended period of beta testing with several developer previews being released on roughly a monthly basis.

Of course, the first developer preview for Android 12 was made available for everyone mid-Feb as expected and brought forward with it several radical changes.

Now, some pretty elaborate teasers were already doing rounds even before the release of Android 12 DP2 showcasing a huge visual overhaul. These obviously can’t be expected from the early developer previews itself but at least we have a clue of where Android is headed.

That said, this does not mean that the Android 12 DP2 is boring in any way. You still get a bunch of cool stuff like face-based auto-rotation, fresh grey theme, new gaming dashboard, iPhone-like back-tap and swipe for notifications gestures, dedicated taskbar for tablets, and much more.

Anyway, perhaps one of the greatest things to ever happen to Android is Project Treble. In simple terms, it is a major re-architecture in the way Android works. It basically separates the Android OS code from the hardware-specific code.

This was done to facilitate quicker updates on part of OEMs which would no longer have to wait for vendors such as Qualcomm to provide updated HALs (hardware-specific code) and instead focus on the Android OS code.

Additionally, it opened a new avenue for the Android developer community – Generic System Images (GSIs). These are essentially ROMs that have been ported from any device with some modifications to run on other devices.

Now, the Redmi Note 7 series is known to have an extremely active developer community that has kept the lineup alive even as official updates have grown scarce lately.

Heck, the series is even slated to get dropped from MIUI 12.5 beta testing from April 24 onwards. In such a scenario, people are more reliant than ever on custom ROMs.

Thankfully, the custom ROM development community, particularly of the Redmi Note 7/7S, is more active than ever. The Redmi Note 7/7S has now received an unofficial Android 12 DP2 update through a Pixel 5 factory image port.

From what we can decipher, the ROM runs perfectly fine and has no major known bugs as such. Keep in mind though that a ported ROM seldom provides a daily driver level experience so you bump into unexpected bugs.
