It’s not your usual dose to see a budget Android smartphone receiving software support (official and unofficial) more than three years down the line. But this has remained an exception for Xiaomi (Redmi) devices over the years.

The ease of bootloader unlocking and installing custom ROMs on Xiaomi devices is what keeps encouraging third-party developers to continue supporting popular devices years after their official support ends. One such device is the Redmi Note 4, now over three years old.

Launched in January 2017, the Redmi Note 4 (Snapdragon variant) last received an official update from Xiaomi in mid-November 2019. This update installed the stable MIUI 11 custom skin on top of Android Nougat.

While it doesn’t look like the Redmi Note 4 MIUI 12 update is officially on the cards, the fact that mido (codename) is such a popular device in the developer community is the reason we are here.

As of this writing, owners of the device can already switch to the latest MIUI 12 update via the popular Xiaomi.eu custom ROM, albeit unofficially.

The update is based on the latest MIUI 12 beta firmware released in China. But given the Xiaomi.eu links, you get pre-baked GApps alongside the latest May 2020 security patch.

If you are still here, you definitely know what follows. Details of the Redmi Note 4 MIUI 12 update can be found on XDA Developers alongside the download link and installation guide.

At this point, it remains unclear if the Redmi Note 4 will join the official list of MIUI 12-compatible devices on Xiaomi.eu. You can check out the current list here.
