New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…
Original story (published on March 09, 2021) follows:
Much has been going on with the software side of the Redmi Note 10 series, especially the Pro variants, even before the commencement of their sales. We previously highlighted how the Redmi Note 10 Pro has already bagged a minor update.
For the uninitiated, the Redmi Note 10 lineup is the latest iteration of the insanely popular Redmi Note series. The series may have very well single-handedly propelled Xiaomi to the position it is in now.
The brand has seen steady growth over the years and has already achieved first place in terms of online sales figures across multiple countries like India and Russia.
Of course, like already said, much of this success can be attributed to the Note series which further strengthens how popular and loved the series is by the users.
Thus, when the Redmi Note 10 series was announced with a high refresh rate super AMOLED display, and some other really cool features at unbelievably reasonable rates, it generated much hype and excitement.
That said, popular devices like these, especially the Snapdragon variants, oversee some pretty active custom ROM developer communities that continue well after the official software support ends.
These communities help keep devices alive and feel good as new with incredibly optimized close-to-stock Android experiences. They also help reduce wait time significantly by releasing custom ROMs right after the release of any new Android version.
By contrast, official updates may take months or even up to a year and are still guaranteed to be buggy. For example, we have seen how users have still been anxiously waiting to get a taste of Android 11-based MIUI on the Redmi Note 9 Pro.
Nevertheless, custom ROMs require the release of the official kernel source code in order to be developed. Android is built on top of the Linux kernel, thus companies are obliged to provide the source code of any kernel binaries they distribute with devices, upon request.
OEMs fulfill this task by uploading these kernel sources on their official portals for the same, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro/10 Pro is of course no exception to this requirement.
Several OEMs unreasonably delay the availability of kernel sources but Xiaomi is definitely not one of them. The Android 11 (R) kernel sources for the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Note 10 Pro Max were recently uploaded before either device has even been released.
To access them, simply head over to this link. Hopefully, following this, the very first custom ROMs will emerge – a piece of great news for fans of modding.
That said, for now, be sure to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12.5 update tracker to stay in the know about its status. FYI, the Redmi Note 10 Pro will be one of the first devices to bag the update.
Update 1 (March 19)
07:30 pm (IST): The Android 11 kernel sources are now available for the Redmi Note 10 (mojito) as well. For more details, check this forum post out.
