While some OEM might break away from this habit, the general practice in the smartphone industry today is that the top tier smartphones and to some extent, the mid-range devices get most of the love from OEMs in terms of updates.

The lower end devices get updated a little less frequently by their OEMs. Often, instead of getting monthly security patches like the other tier devices, these low-end devices have to make do with quarterly updates of one update every two months or so.

Case in point, the Redmi 8A. This device was launched in September 2019, running Android 9 Pie with a promise of an Android 10 update sometime within the device’s lifespan.

Almost 10 months into the device’s life and still, Android 10 remains an elusive dream for Xiaomi Redmi 8A users. From the look of things, this update might be a long way from now.

The Redmi 8A just bagged the May 2020 Android security patch and yes, you guessed it, it is still based on Android 9 Pie. The update has been spotted for the Chinese variant of the Redmi 8A and bears the software version number V11.0.10.0.PCPCNXM.

The update’s changelog is the generic one we’ve seen with many security patch updates.

Changelog:
– Updated Android Security Patch to May 2020. Increased system security.

Below is the download link for this update;

  • Device: Redmi 8A
  • Codename: OLIVELITE
  • Version: V11.0.10.0.PCPCNXM
  • Android: 9
    • Type: Recovery

Even as the Chinese variant bags this update, the Redmi 8A in other regions is still stuck on the March 2020 patch as the most recent update. This is a far cry from all the promised updates that the device is reportedly eligible for.

Global MIUI 12 update roadmap

See, when Xiaomi released its MIUI 12 roadmap, the Redmi 8A appeared on the list. From the timelines, MIUI 12 for the Redmi 8A is expected in phase 2, somewhere in July-August.

Will Redmi 8A users have to wait that long for the Android 10 update to hit their device? No one knows, but given others like the Redmi Note 8 should get MIUI 12 along with Android 10, the same case could apply for the Redmi 8A.
