New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on January 11, 2022) follows:
Procreate is one of the most popular apps for digital illustration among iPad device users. The large number of options it offers made it a favorite of many professionals.
But, in the last few hours, its users are experiencing a frustrating freezing or crashing issue that is directly interfering with their work.
More specifically, the crashing issue in Procreate app reportedly occurs when the users try to use layers. Also, it seems everything started from the arrival of the most recent update of the app (1, 2, 3, 4).
Procreate app freezing or crashing when opening layers
According to multiple reports, users are unable to use layers since the most recent update, as it causes a freezing or crashing glitch that does not allow them to continue their work.
The layer option keeps freezing the entire program
so this only just happened today but while I was drawing I went to tap on the layers icon and it wouldn’t open and I couldn’t do anything except close the app. when I opened it again and went back to the painting every other option was working just fine albeit a bit slower than usual but every time the layers option would freeze everything.

Layers keep crashing
Hello, I’m fairly new to procreate and my procreate just updated and it worked normally for a while and then as I went to change the layer the app would freeze and I would have to close it and reopen it and the layers just kept crashing when trying to open the layers. I checked my other works and the layers just freeze, but switching from brush to eraser works fine.

In addition to the above, the issue is so severe that it is reportedly not enough to close the app. After freezing or crashing in the app, users are forced to restart their iPad.
Procreate team already aware, fix in works
Fortunately, the Procreate team is already aware of the constant freezing or crashing issue in their app. This is confirmed by the same company in response to some reports.
This is a bug we’re aware of. Our team believe they’ve found it and are working super hard on a fix. We really appreciate your patience.

But, at the moment, there is no information on an estimated arrival date for a fix. Then, users will have to wait a little longer to receive updates on this.
In the meantime, when new developments related to the matter arise, we will update this article with the relevant information to keep you informed.
Update 1 (January 12, 2022)
10:09 am (IST): Procreate is now rolling out a new 5.2.4 patch that fixes the layer freezing issue. So, after installing it, users won’t encounter any freezing or crashing issues with the app when opening layers.
#Procreate patch 5.2.4 is out – it fixes that Layer freeze issue. Our dev team worked their butts off to get this out for you ASAP, thank you for the patience (Source)
Update 2 (January 13, 2022)
11:30 am (IST): It appears that many users are still facing the freezing issue even after installing the latest update that’s available for the app.
i’ve updated, restarted my ipad and moved to a smaller canvas size and it’s still freezing, do you have any suggestions? (Source)
Yeah same..I even tried to open a document, and it froze AS it was opening. It was still in the animation of opening. Couldn’t get out or turn my iPad off or anything. Had to learn to hard shut the iPad off.. (Source)
It still doesn’t work for me 😭 Please help I just wanna draw, whenever I press the layers it does exactly what you all said where it freezes, but I can actually exit the app instead of having to restart. There’s no new update for me and it says I’m on 5.2.4 (Source)
Update 3 (June 8, 2022)
11:51 am (IST): Procreate support on Twitter has informed users that their app does not support the iOS beta versions.
And users will likely experience bugs and crashes if they are using the app on the iOS 16 beta. In this case, the only solution is to revert back from beta.
A quick PSA: #Procreate doesn’t support beta iOS versions!
– If you’re using the iOS16 beta, you’ll likely experience crashes and bugs. The “fix” is to revert from the beta to the current iOS version 😊 (Source)
Moreover, they have also provided an explanation for why they don’t provide any patch on the beta version.
Why would we patch/release multiple fixes for something the majority of our artists aren’t using? It takes us away from other projects for bugs that might not be in the public release of iOS16. We’re a small team and our time is better spent elsewhere (Source)
Update 4 (November 28, 2022)
01:14 pm (IST): Several users are now reporting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that Procreate app is freezing or lagging for them on iPad Pro when they try to open Color Panel.
Luckily, the support team has acknowledged this issue and said that they are working to resolve it. Moreover, they’ve also suggested a potential workaround to fix it.
We’re working on a fix for this. For now, disable Palm Support in Settings > Procreate and also Show Effects when using Pencil in Settings > Apple Pencil. Using exclusively your finger to interact with the Colors Menu and ColorDrop should mitigate this until we can patch it 🙏 (Source)
Update 5 (December 21, 2022)
12:09 pm (IST): Some Procreate users are now reporting (1, 2) that the app is crashing for them after v5.3 update. Luckily, the support team has acknowledged the issue and they are currently investigating it
Moreover, they have suggested a workaround that might help you resolve this problem. You can check it out below.
If you have crashing issues, try checking if you have QuickMenu active in Actions > Prefs > Gesture Controls. If so, try changing it to be invoked with Touch or toggle it off altogether 🤞🏻 (Source)
