Update (January 12):

After first gen Pixel, what’s now coming to light is that Pixel 2 users are also facing USB file transfer issues. Going by the reports, the phone only keeps charging, and does not notify to switch USB modes upon connecting to the PC over a USB 3.0 connection.

According to one of those affected, the problem seems to be related to the chipset being used in the computer system.

What’s relieving is that Google has started investigating the matter in question, and is asking the complainants to share bug reports. Here’s what Google employee Orrin said a few hours back while addressing the complainants:

I’m going to be reaching out privately for bug reports and additional information

Original story below:

It was late last month when Google started pushing out the Android Oreo update to its Pixel series of smartphones. Sadly, shortly after the roll out began, users started complaining about issues with USB file transfers. It’s been over a month now, and complaints continue to pour in.

Specifically, there are two types of issues that are being reported: USB file transfers not working at all and file transfers failing randomly in between. Those encountering the first type of problem say their PCs fail to recognize their pixel device when they connect the two for file transfers through USB.

The problem, as per those affected, rears its ugly head when using USB 3.0 ports for transferring files.

Users are specifically blaming the Android Oreo update for this issue.

Some non-pixel users are also complaining about the same problem with Oreo update.

So it could be solely an Oreo issue, or one that’s affecting both Pixels and Nexuses.

Coming to the second problem, it’s being reported that the phone becomes undetectable during an ongoing file transfer operation, causing the transfer process to fail without any error or warning.

It’s worth mentioning that not everyone is affected by these issues as there have been some stray comments from users that say things are working fine or them. But then, the number of those reporting these issues is just too high to ignore the problems completely.

As for workarounds, steps like factory reset, turning on/off USB debugging option, and clearing cache/data for certain apps (‘External storage’ and ‘Media storage) followed by a restart sorted out the problems in only a handful of cases.

So it’s reasonable to say that the Oreo update isn’t playing fine with USB transfers. But as it stands currently, Google is still silent, and complaints are piling up.
