Original story (published on May 13, 2021) follows:

Users who have used, or installed any modern Linux operating system are privy to the Swap Memory feature. For the uninitiated, here’s an over-simplification of this feature.

Memory swapping is a technology that enables an operating system to provide more memory to a running application or process than is available in physical random access memory (RAM).

Effectively, this technology allows a computer to have more RAM than it actually does by using some of the unused internal storage (ROM) as RAM.

This tech is particularly useful for systems where upgrading internals is not really an option or is too costly.

Mobile tech advances pretty rapidly and in the past few years, we have seen smartphones borrowing some of the tech employed in traditional computers as these gadgets get ever more capable.

Not too long ago, we saw OnePlus introducing the Turbo Boost feature. This tech allows supported OnePlus devices to have a little more virtual RAM, and we all know the benefits of more RAM on a system.

We’ve seen similar technology from other Chinese OEMs like Vivo and Xiaomi and today, it is coming to light that Oppo also wants in on this.

Oppo has, on its social media handles, been teasing a similar RAM expansion technology with the potential of the following benefits.

– Decreased lag
– Quicker app start
– Smooth running multiple apps

Little else has been shared in line with this RAM expansion feature but Oppo says that this will not be available for all devices. The launch time for this feature may vary per country and phone model.

As this is really not much to go on, we shall continue to keep an eye on this and update as and when we get more details on availability, supported devices and how this feature works so stay tuned.
