OnePlus users report screen casting and notification issues after Oreo

While the chocolate creme Oreo cookie whelms our palate with sweetness, we cannot say the same for Android’s newest mobile OS with the same name. Rather reverse goes in the case of Android Oreo, which being fraught with bugs, has left majority of users with bitter experiences.

Adding to the never ending trail of Oreo triggered troubles, OnePlus phone owners (OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 3 series) – who upgraded to OxygenOS 5.0.1 – are now bringing two new broken functionalities to light: both screen casting and notifications are out of order. Let’s take a closer look at both the problems one by one:

Issue 1: Screen casting not working

For couple of weeks, OnePlus users have been chiming about glitchy screen casting. Going by reports, during screen mirroring, in some cases despite connecting successfully, nothing gets displayed on the TV screen, and in others the video feed initially lags, and then disconnects after a while.

Take a look at the following user comments (on the official OnePlus forum and XDA) to catch hold of the actual matter in question:

After updating my OnePlus 5 to Oreo, casting screen to my TV has started to lag and disconnect after 5 mins

Ever since the Oxygen 5.0.1 update, anytime I use my OP5 to stream to my smart TV via screen mirroring, the video feed lags behind on the TV and gets pixelated at some points, however on the OP5 itself you can see the video without any hitches even when it’s streaming

All these issues have come up after Oreo update..even Cast does not work properly.. …it gets connected instantly..but the problem is video wont be mirrored properly..most of the time the mirrored screen looks half black and with lot of delays…

I have been Using cast screen on my Samsung Smart tv from oneplus 5.But after updating to oreo it does not work.When i select the samsung tv from the available devices it says Connected but there is no display on my tv and after 30 sec Samsung tv shows an error that this video data is not support.It was working in Nougat

Issue 2: Notification settings keep reverting back to default

Apart from the buggy screen casting, even notifications are behaving erratic, reportedly for apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber etc. What’s being put across by those with OnePlus devices (running Oreo) is that the notification settings – irrespective of being set to low/ high – get reset to default after some time.

Here’s how the troubled users word the problem:

I have changed my WhatsApp group notification settings from URGENT to LOW. But as soon as I get a new message , the settings are back to previous setting. It starts ringing default message tone and vibration

Yes I do have this problem. It goes back to "Urgent" for individual and also group messages. This is something the Oreo & Oxygen OS has to take care of and not WhatsApp, that's because I stopped WhatsApp from changing or modifying system settings, even then this bug exists

Having the same problem as you and also with Telegram. I’ve set it to High many times and it sticks for a while, then something reverts it to Urgent with no warning. Massively annoying

No not just WhatsApp. In Telegram when you switch to Medium it sometimes stays that way as long as you keep the settings tab in recent. But as soon as you receive a message or open the tab it goes right back to Urgent. Must be an OOS notification setting issue

It does not seem to be an issue specific to Whatsapp (which recently received notification channels support on Android Oreo), as OnePlus users have reported the problem for other apps as well.

The story doesn’t end here. Adding to the above mentioned problems, some OnePlus users also complaining about heating issues after Oreo, but those reports are few at the moment.

Sadly, the company hasn’t said anything yet, and all the problems – be it screen casting, notifications or heating issues – stand unaddressed. Meanwhile the number of reports continue to escalate. We hope the company addresses all the aforementioned issues before they become even more widespread.
