New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on November 13, 2020) follows:
Custom Android skins do offer so much more functionality to a point where baked-in features defeat the purpose of having a dedicated app for given tasks.
Case in point, many skins now offer call recording natively. This could be a very useful feature for people that would like proof of a conversation for whatever reason.
We’ve also seen devices that come with Google’s own dialer app getting this feature too, albeit with different options.
OnePlus devices with OnePlus dialer also offer the option to record calls natively, albeit with limited functionality.
This, because recently, the feature has been tweaked to remove support for automatic call recording on OnePlus devices. Now, users have to initiate the call recording.
Additionally, users on the other end of the call being recorded also get a background tone/alert that is meant to also notify them that the call is being recorded, presumably for privacy reasons.
This change isn’t sitting well with users of OnePlus devices especially in India. These users want to have the option to automatically record calls brought back to their OnePlus devices.
A section of these users has resorted to raising their complaints and recently, a staff member has reached out, notifying them that OnePlus is indeed exploring possibilities of enabling automatic call recording in India.
While the OnePlus staff member seems optimistic about the prospects of this feature, he admits that there is nothing concrete at the moment.
India is probably the only country that has such strong feedback, there must be reasons pushing people to do so, the local business environment could be one of them. Local laws in India do not clearly require the consent of the other party when recording calls (at the moment). We respect social differences, we are exploring feasible solutions within the scope permitted by local laws. hope I can share some good news soon.
While this isn’t exactly a promise of a feature that will make its way back to OnePlus devices, the fact that there are no legal hurdles is a good sign.
We can only hope that OnePlus obliges and enables automatic call recording for devices that do have call recording enabled.
Recently, we looked at an issue where OnePlus 8T devices did not have the option to record calls. We also looked at a workaround for that and you can check out our coverage of the same here.
Update (January 6)
IST 11:16 am: Users with OnePlus devices running Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 can install this version of the OnePlus dialer that has automatic call recording baked in. This works for OnePlus Nord devices running OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1.
Update (April 26)
IST 12:00 pm: OnePlus has reportedly enabled this automatic call recording feature on the devices with the Google dialer app starting with version V63. This only applies to users in India. More on that here.
