[Updated] OnePlus 7 & OnePlus 7 Pro OxygenOS Open Beta 12 update rollout postponed, OEM says fixing device unlock bug will take longer

OnePlus has got to be one of the leading enthusiast brands in the smartphone industry today. And for good reason. The company’s devices address a certain niche market that is very particular about specifications.

Granted, with the OnePlus 8 family, OnePlus is now playing in the major leagues with the likes on Apple and Samsung but the brand recognition prevails; you get a lot more than you pay for with a OnePlus device.

OnePlus’ 2019 flagships, the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro remain some of the best Android smartphones in the business today. The company is also treating them as such, pushing out regular updates and patches regularly.

However, the latest Beta update for the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro didn’t quite go well. This is because soon after the Open Beta 12 rolled out, users started complaining that their OnePlus devices would not unlock. A rather serious predicament to find yourself in. The update has since been pulled and you can read more about that here.

Today, OnePlus has released a statement to address this issue and it reads in part;

“The issue is quite complex as many mechanisms could trigger the unlock error, and it will take some time for us to find the exact solution.”
“Instead of rushing to release a flawed OBT version, we believe that postponing the release will guarantee an OxygenOS experience in line with your expectations.”

With this, it is pretty clear that it might be a while before the Open Beta is rolled out again. We can also only hope that OnePlus finds a way to help out the affected users because usually, if your password doesn’t work, chances are that they might have to lose all their data as a factory reset is the only viable solution.

This also goes to show users just how risky and unstable pre-release software can be. Time and time again, OEMs advise users to install these Beta updates on their secondary devices and this is one of the reasons.
