[Update: Released] OnePlus 5/5T Android 10 (OxygenOS 10) bug-fixing update may be around the corner

Here’s the thing, OnePlus prides itself as being one of the most consumer-oriented brands we have today. It is the brand that listens to users and grants their wishes in the form of updates. And for the most part, that is true.

OnePlus also has a rather slim portfolio of devices, devices that it is able to adequately support in terms of updates, and bug fixes. It is, therefore, a little strange that users of the OnePlus 5 and 5T are still facing issues with their devices.

The OnePlus 5 and 5T were unveiled back in 2017, running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. Since then, the devices have received regular updates and currently, they run Android 10 with OnePlus’ OxygenOS 10 or HydrogenOS 10 for the international and Chinese variants respectively.

Sadly though, the update to Android 10 has not been without its fair share of issues. Soon after the Android 10 build rolled out to OnePlus 5/5T units, users started complaining of a few bugs.

Some of the issues that affected device owners complained about include a bug where users were unable to receive SMS on their devices. The update also reportedly messed with the call-recording ability of the said devices.

Understandably, this buggy update didn’t sit well with affected users, some even feeling like this wasn’t meant to be an official build as it is unlike OnePlus to push such a buggy update to devices.

Being a consumer-oriented brand, it was only a matter of time before we saw a hot-fix that would patch up all the bugs reported in this initial release. Well, according to reports, the Chinese variants of the OnePlus 5/5T have received an update that mainly consists of bugfixes.

The Chinese update’s changelog is as follows.

• Fix the problem of weak GPS positioning signal
• Fixed the problem of no sound in certain videos on Youku
• Fix the problem that the alarm does not ring when the device is off
• Fix the problem that fingerprint recognition cannot be used under certain circumstances
• Update Android security patch to 2020.06

• Added Wallet App, integrated bus/access card entrance into Wallet App, making operation more convenient
• Added WeChat payment method for bus card recharge

camera
• Electronic anti-shake function has been added to bring you a more stable shooting experience

Initial feedback from users is generally positive, many confirming that most of the issues that they were facing have largely been addressed.

As mentioned, the said update has been rolling out to the Chinese variants of the OnePlus 5/5T with HydrogenOS 10. That said, if previous trends are anything to go by, we should see the same update extended to OxygenOS 10-running OnePlus 5/5T anytime now.

Could this be the update that finally nails all the issues that users of the OnePlus 5/5T have had to deal with on their devices since Android 10 rolled out? Well, we can only wait and see.

In the Android community, it is not uncommon for major Android updates to appear a little too sketchy. Xiaomi has been a popular subject in this regard owing to how the company handles updates to its Android One-powered Mi A-line of devices.

We can only hope that OnePlus, and other Android OEMs by extension, get their act together and stop pushing half-baked, poorly tested builds to its device users.

OnePlus 5/5T folks have been waiting for the bugfix update ever since the OEM pushed Android 10 to the units. Looks like users will have to wait longer as the OEM is fixing up some issue which has led to the delay in the release. Here’s what the announcement post says:

When we tested this version internally, we found a serious bug related to the communication module. The team evaluates this issue can seriously affect the user experience. Moreover, this issue required a lot back and forth with communication carrier to solve the problems collaboratively, considerably delaying the release. In turn, this made it impossible to release the next stable OnePlus 5 and 5T version on time.

We will continue to do our best to solve the bug ASAP and also share the progress with you once we have an update on the release plan.
