Typically, Android flagship devices get updated to two new versions of Android and that is pretty much the end of the line for it. From there, users can only hope for regular security patches until the device is discontinued.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s was first unveiled back in October 2016 running Android 6.0. The device has since been updated and now stands at Android 8.1 with either MIUI 10 or MIUI 11, depending on your region.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s in China has been updated to Android 8.1 with MIUI 11. You can grab the download link for the same in our coverage of the same here. Even with that, the Global users of the Mi 5s are still stuck at MIUI 10.

According to new reports, these Global users of this build might as well give up on hoping for a similar build for their units. This is because the company has officially discontinued the Xiaomi Mi 5s.

“Official Update Support for Mi 5s has been terminated already. So, no more hopes to get MIUI or Android updates for Mi 5s.”

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise. As mentioned, the Mi 5s was launched way back in 2016 and it is powered by the Snapdragon 821. It has a 3,200 mAh battery, 5.15-inch display, 3/4 GB of RAM, offers 64/128 GB.

While the other specifications are passable for 2020, the Snapdragon 821 is a little too old at this point and will get beat by almost all mid-range chips in the market today.

That said, thanks to Android’s Open Source nature and the developer community, there might still be hope for the Xiaomi Mi 5s in terms of aftermarket firmware, but even with those, stability cannot be fully guaranteed, owing to the age of the chipset.
