This story is being continuously updated…. New updates are being added at the bottom…..

Original story (published on April 13, 2020) follows:

Although Asus is not a brand that is listed among the top smartphone manufacturers across the globe, when it comes to the online market, it has been able to capture a decent share of the pie.

The Taiwanese company has not let any negativity affect the products that they offer, and we have seen the company has been able to churn out good-value smartphones and also has done a good job in rolling out timely updates.

The company was among one of the few OEMs, that was able to roll out the Android 10 stable update for the Asus ZenFone 5Z last year, soon after the OS was released by Google.

After that recently the Asus ZenFone 5 has picked up the Android 10 beta update hinting that the stable update is right around the corner. Surprisingly, as per an email, it has been revealed that the Android 10 update will be the last firmware update for the Asus ZenFone 5/5Z smartphones.

But, the email also mentioned that the Asus ZenFone 5/5Z will continue to receive the bugfix and security updates for some more time. It is quite understandable as the device came with Android 8 Oreo out of the box and is in the pipeline to receive its second major OS update.

And as per the default update policy of any smartphone OEM, a smartphone is eligible to get two major OS upgrades. However, there is some positive response from one of the Asus moderators.

Responding to one user query, where the user asked to provide ZenUI 7 on top of Android 10 itself, the moderator did not rule out the possibility and stated that:

We can always hope but do have in mind that Samsung sold millions of those phones and their cost to release a new Android is about the same as for us. I’m not saying that it won’t happen but don’t get surprised if it doesn’t.

Though we cannot take every word of the moderators as the word from the company itself, it is quite good to see that there is at least a hope of getting that.

And moreover, going by the example the user gave in the query, Samsung has also made the One UI 2.1 available for its 2018 Galaxy S9 unit with Android 10 on top. So, there is a possibility for the Asus ZenFone 5/5Z of getting the ZenUI 7 on top of Android 10.

Update 1 (September 02)

IST: 03:36 pm: Earlier this year Asus announced that Asus ZenFone 5/5Z will not be receiving the Android 11 update. This announcement did not go well among a lot of users who are now asking Asus to update their units to the upcoming Android 11.

Some of these device owners say they’ll even settle for an updated version of the company’s skin on top of Android 10 if Android 11 proves too much to ask. See the full details here.

Update 2 (September 12)

Incoming is a ray of hope. A Zentalk moderator has recently shared that Android 11 and ZenUI 7 are currently being evaluated for the ZenFone 5Z devices. You can read the complete coverage here.
