We fail to understand what’s the point of beta testing, when majority of reported issues do not get fixed before updates are made public. While multiple such bugs have already made their way to Android 8.1 (stable), another issue has come to light that wasn’t fixed when pointed in developer preview. Case in point: loss of tethering/hotspot functionality on Nexus 5X and 6P after the Android 8.1 update.

It was back in October, when some Nexus 5X/6P users operating the beta version of 8.1 reported loss of Internet sharing – both by USB tethering and WiFi hotspot – on Google’s official issue tracking website. After investigating for a while, Google left it to be fixed later. Here’s what the company had exactly said:

And now, after the Android 8.1 stable version is out, the same – tethering/hotspot problems – continue to trouble Nexus users. Take a look at how some of the complainants have explained the problem:

Following is what Google said more recently while addressing the issue (in a separate tread) on its official issue tracking website:

Meanwhile, users have found out a temporary workaround till the company considers the problem worth fixing. All you have to do is to remove the APN type string value ‘default, supl’ in mobile network settings, so that the field is blank.

Well, it’s worth mentioning that in most of the cases where the aforementioned workaround resolved the problem, users said they are on Telstra’s network (in Australia). So we are not sure if it’s a Telstra-specific or generic workaround, but you can (and should) give it a try.
