Motorola phones get call recording feature through Google Phone app

Details of Google Phone call recording popped up early this year suggesting that Google was gearing up on making it a default feature on future Pixel phones and others that replaced their stock dialer apps with the Phone app.

Fast forward to mid-April 2020, HMD Global’s Juho Sarvikas confirmed that Android One-powered Nokia devices in India, which are among the few devices that use the Google Phone app as the default dialer app, would be getting the feature via an update to the dialer app.

Motorola, another company that also has a bunch of its phones installed with Google Phone as the default dialer app, seems to be following in the footsteps of Nokia.

According to a Redditor, the Moto G7’s dialer app has just received the call recording feature. Apparently, it doesn’t look like the feature is coming through an over-the-air (OTA) software update to the Phone app.

If indeed this is the case, it’s likely that Google is pulling the strings via a server-side update. This should explain why some people on the same version of the dialer app haven’t received call recording on their Motorola phones.

Also, it’s worth remembering that not all Moto handsets have the Google Phone app as the default dialer app. Furthermore, a support page that recently popped up and has since been taken down suggests call recording may be limited to phones running Android Pie and above.

Last but not least, the Google Phone call recording feature is likely to be region/country-based, meaning it may not be available in some countries due to local laws.
