Motorola Moto Z2 Play will no longer receive new software updates, support confirms

The Motorola Moto Z2 Play released back in 2017 with Android 7.1.1 pre-installed and has since then picked up the update to Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9 Pie. Therefore, the device has received its two major OS updates as expected.

Motorola releases up to two major Android updates for its mid-range to high-end smartphones such as the Moto Z2 Play. On the other hand, the Moto G series mostly only get one major OS update. But what’s more disappointing is the fact that the Moto E series barely even get one OS update.

So it’s safe to say that Motorola does a rather terrible job at keeping its smartphones up to date. Nevertheless, the company does roll out monthly or quarterly security patches for its devices for a while even after they receive their last major OS update.

But the Motorola Moto Z2 Play has not received any new security updates for several months, that we know of yet. FYI, the update to Android 9 brought along the June security patch. So since the release of the Pie update, it has not picked up many security updates.

According to Motorola Brazil, the Moto Z2 Play will not be getting any new security updates. Although, this isn’t surprising since the device stopped receiving updates many months ago. But now that it has been confirmed via an official channel, all hopes for the device getting new updates have vanished.

It’s a shame that Android OEMs get away with providing only 2 years worth of software updates whereas iOS users comfortably get 4-5 OS updates. Nevertheless, Motorola is currently rolling out the Android 10 update for eligible phones, of which only a handful are yet to receive the update.
