[Update: Conflicting report] No more update for Motorola Moto G6 series as company ends software support

Updates! We love them. We long for them. They bring new features, new system UIs and oftentimes, they improve system security and we all love security, don’t we?

On Android, it is pretty standard for phone makers to support a device for three years, at least for the flagships and mid-range devices. This often includes two major Android versions and a final year of regular security patches.

The Moto G6 line of devices consists of the Moto G6, the Moto G6 Play and the Moto G6 Plus. These devices were launched between April and May 2018 and are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450, 430, and 630 respectively.

All these devices launched with Android 8 Oreo and have since been updated to run Android 9 Pie. Today, it appears as though this is the end of the line for these three Moto G6 devices as the company says it will no longer push out updates to them.

Motorola’s official pages for the Moto G6, G6 Plus and the G6 Play now display a message that reads:

“This product will no longer receive security updates.”

Also, in a Twitter response to a user who sought to know what the update he received this morning was, Motorola’s official handle responds confirming that indeed, that is the end-of-life update to the Moto G6.

With that, it is confirmed that there will be no more updates to the Moto G6 series of devices, be they regular security patches or major system updates.

However, thanks to the developer community, users have no shortage of aftermarket options to scratch their Android updates itch. For the Moto G6, there’s AOSP-based RevengeOS, JetterPie for the G6 Play and LineageOS 17.1 for the G6 Plus among many more options.

We shall continue to keep an eye on the developer community for afterlife support options available for these three devices so stay tuned for that.

According to the Product Expert, the Moto G6 is still an Android Enterprise Recommended device in some regions and thus may continue receiving security updates. It is now into year 3 of its three-year security updates promise.
