It wasn’t even two months after release that Moto G5s Plus users started complaining of an erratic battery charging behaviour, stating the battery % decreases instead of increasing when the charger is plugged in. And all this despite a boxed Turbo power charger – designed to charge the phone in minutes instead of hours – being used.

Going by reports, it’s not that the phone is actually not charging. It does charge, as the moment turbo charger is disconnected the phone displays the correct %. But it never reaches 100%, rather it gets stuck at 99% irrespective of how long its charged for. Also the dropping battery percentage (while charging) ends up turning off the device.

The following user shared screenshots clearly showcase the gradually decreasing battery percentage despite the turbo charger connected. Here’s how the actual user explains the drop

Here, You can see It was –
99% on 4:01 charging
94% on 4:03 charging
88% on 4:07 charging
86% on 4:14 charging
On the Lock screen it’s showing “TurboPower connected” instead of remaining time.

A quick look at the following user comments will give you more clarity on the matter:

In the last two days all of a sudden when I plug in the phone , the battery starts draining. I had it at 30percent and plugged it in this morning (I had it off.. powered off) when I looked it was at 13 percent. So I unplugged the phone and then plugged it back in. Nothing…. Then I turned it on and plugged it in and it showed 87 percent. When I plugged it in while on.. it started draining… This is with the supplied battery charger and cord. Something is really not right!!

When I Connect charger, Battery charge Indicator start showing as charge decreasing,. But actually battery is charging internaly. The fun part of it is,charge indicator will come down to zero and it will switch off the prone by saying “low battery”. But if i restart the device, Enough charge will be there. Now I have to manage like charge for some time, And discunnect the chareger and Charge again,..So on..

When I plug my phone in to charge using the factory supplied turbo charger, it goes in reverse. For example, if I charge it when I says 60%, I’ll come back to check a few minutes later and it will say 58%. Then eventually it will go down to zero. When I unplug it after charging overnight it will critically beep as if it’s about to die. I turn the screen off and turn it back on, then it will say charged 99%.

Well now it is very irritating. The battery percentage is going down until it reaches 0% when the phone is plugged in. If unplugged, the % reading seems to be proper. If again plugged in, the % again starts going down. Safe mode, force reboot, reset …none of them was a solution.

My Moto g5s plus is just a month old and I’ve been facing this weird problem since morning , my phone is discharging while connected to the charging , and it is draining rapidly when connected to the charger

Same problem with my less than 2month old motog5S plus. Battery percentage is completelly alleatory, changing every time I plug the bundled turbo wall charger. After charging all night long, it showed 20% battery in this morning. When I unplugged, showed 99%, and 5 minutes later, 70%.

The phone’s battery starts reducing once the charger is plugged in and suddenly increases when the charger is removed. The phone is never 100% charged.

It’s worth mentioning that the problem seem specific to Moto G5s Plus users in India.

Not only Motorola/Lenovo help forum, similar reports can be seen on micro-blogging site Twitter as well:

It’s not that Motorola is not aware of the issue. One of the MotoAgents informed the complainants back in November (last year) that the issue will be fixed in a future update.

Hi guys! I brought this up to our product team. I’m glad to inform you that this will be addressed in a future update, probably integrated with other improvements. I wish I could provide a specific timeframe but it’s always a moving target. You will be automatically notified on your phone once it becomes available.

Later on, in March, the same MotoAgent updated the affected users that

An improvement has already been released to address this particular concern — Battery starts decreasing on charging.

Further more, after a few days they revealed more information saying

An improvement update should have already been released to address this concern. Could you please tell me the current software and build number of your phone? It should be on NPSS26.116-61-2 in India.

With users continuously complaining about facing the issue and updates failing to fix the matter, the concerned MotoAgent recently updated the relevant thread saying

We have this concern re-escalated to our product team and we are waiting for an update. I will post back once I have more information.

We fail to understand why is Motorola taking so long to fix something as basic as a battery percentage glitch? We hope this time the company delivers the pill that those affected have been looking for. In case, you are facing the aforementioned battery-related issue on your Moto G5s Plus unit, drop us a comment.
