So Xiaomi’s current skin on top of Android, MIUI 12, has been rolling out to eligible devices over the past few months. Very important milestones have been achieved in this rollout and at the time of writing, there are reports that MIUI 12 update batch 3 rollout has began.

With this, it is safe to assume that this rollout is as good as complete and focus will, in the next few months, start to shift to Android 11 and MIUI 13.

However, Xiaomi has been known to reserve the major changes for its MIUI updates and not Android version updates. Therefore, the next set of big changes for Xiaomi devices could come with MIUI 13, whenever that is.

We’ve seen a few hints of what we might expect from the MIUI 13 build. First, we know that Xiaomi is in fact working on MIUI 13 and that it lays a lot of focus on animations.

We also know that the MIUI 13 build could bring a redesigned Power Off animation along with a redesigned Power Menu, presumably to fall in line with Android 11’s new Power Menu.

So what else could we see? Well, in the second round Q&A session with Mi Engineer Face to Face, we’re getting an early look at what might be cooking for MIUI 13.

Super Wallpapers in MIUI 12 is one of the highlight features of the skin. Sadly, it is not available on all eligible devices owing to hardware limitations.

Also, only first party wallpapers are available for now. Xiaomi says it plans to open this to designers by providing them with tools to create their own. Here’s the conversation.

Q: Will there be a tool that allows the user to create their own Super Wallpaper? I also use the application clone option which allows me to clone the same application once. Could this option be extended to include the ability to clone the same application multiple times in the future?

A: We are thinking about it. Just like the theme, let the designer do the unlocking animation.

Of course, it is expected that these developers and engineers would receive all kinds of feature requests for MIUI 13 update. One rather interesting feature request has to do with Xiaomi devices’ ability to recognise faces.

So now imagine being able to power off your device by making eye movements. Well, here’s what the team says when asked about this and the ability of the device to perform blood tests.

Q: In the future, will we be able to turn the phone on and off with our eye movements, except for facial recognition when using MIUI. I think it’s a must-have feature. Also, will blood tests be possible through the health center application?

A: We will make a reasonable evaluation, but there will be the possibility of misoperation.

The sky is the limit when it comes to features that are set to come in MIUI 13, but all within reason. We shall continue to keep an eye on MIUI 13 development and update out tracker as and when we get info so stay tuned for that.

We know that MIUI 13 Global ROM for developers is expected soon so that is already something to look foward to.
