macOS Ventura 13.1 update broke 'external display resolution' & 'option to change default browser' for some (workaround)

macOS 13 (Ventura) got the v13.1 update this month as its most recent incremental version. As usual, the update brought multiple bug fixes and tweaks.

But in the recent past, we have already covered some Ventura issues reported by users. For instance, the ‘Added to logins items’ bug in browsers, annoying persistent notifications, among others.

Now, multiple users are reporting a couple of issues that arrive or persist after the new update. Apparently, the ‘external display resolution’ and ‘change default browser’ options are broken on macOS Ventura 13.1.

After the latest macOS stable update, the default resolution for external displays is different. And, when users try to set another resolution, they are all marked as ‘low resolution’.

This problem results in very small UI elements as the new default resolution. Meanwhile, trying to switch to another resolution noticeably affects image quality and sharpness.

Ventura 13.1 Broke my External Display Resolutions (low resolution)! Since the latest update I was defaulted to 3840×1600 and I wanted to change this however when I saw the Displays menu, suddenly most options shown were low resolution!

I’m running the same monitor with the same Thunderbolt cable between two intel based Macs and the difference is striking.

Hi,after upgrading to Ventura 13.1 my external display (Dell U49) has only default resolution with retina support (HiDPI). Everything looks small. It also doesn’t have any scaling options.

It’s worth pointing out that this issue was already present in the macOS Ventura 13 beta version:

I have an M1 MacBook Air with an LG 34WK95U display and have to run it in native 5120×2160 resolution because the next available res makes my screen look like a Playskool toy.

Unfortunately, the issue was not fixed in the stable rollout, and it persists even after new updates.

The other issue prevents users from changing the default web browser to open ‘WEBLOC’ files. A WEBLOC file is basically a website shortcut that redirects the user to a URL.

However, it seems that macOS Ventura 13.1 is not allowing users to change the default browser to open these WEBLOCs. According to reports, other browsers and the ‘Change All’ option in the list are grayed out.

I cannot change the default web browser for .webloc shortcuts on the desktop. I’ve checked to insure Firefox is default browser in Settings, Desktop & Dock.

When I right click on the .webloc file and choose “Get Info”, the ability to change to Firefox is grayed out and also the button “Change All” is grayed out.

new Ventura release locked permissions on webloc files. Can no longer choose default browser. Get following error message when trying to change default app. “The item is either locked or damaged, or in a folder you don’t have permission to modify (error code -10823).”
