Android Oreo has yet again had a bad landing. This time, Lenovo K8 Note devices are the ones unsettled after the Android 8.0 update (which got rolling just last month). Two major issue are being reported by K8 Note users across the company’s official help forum. Let’s take a look at them one by one.
Issue 1: Overheating due to excessive CPU consumption
Battery drains after receiving a new update are taken normally, for the reason that updates may take some time to settle on new devices. But what if the device starts consuming high CPU and heating up after the update? Well, that of course becomes a safety concern. And same is the case with K8 Note users who installed Oreo on their units.
Users report that their devices are heating up because of high CPU consumption, as high as 100% in some cases. Some have also reported slow charging and lagging issues along with battery drainage and over heating. A quick go through the following selection of user comments will give you more clarity on the matter:
My k8 note heating up very much after the Android o update. Discovered the reason to be high CPU usage almost 100%
I am also having same issue. My K8 Note is also Over Heating all the time since I updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. I tried restarting the phone. I tried safe mode. The CPU usage is showing at least 90% all the time.
And when the phone is not at all used. It is in rest condition then to it is getting hot.
Heating is a problem agreed but whats worse is the throttling that leads to lags. gaming is even worse
Why are 4 CPU cores at 100% utilisation even when no App is open – is the phone cryptomining stealthily?
A good chunk of users complaints can be seen on micro-blogging site Twitter (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) as well.
What’s good is that the company is currently looking into the matter, as one of the senior motoagents who asked the affected users to share their devices IMEIs, updated the complainants yesterday saying:
I know it’s hard to wait but our team is currently investigating this issue and we’ll be reaching out once we have an update.
We hope Lenovo figures out whatever is causing the mess soon, as well as comes up with a fix to address the same.
The story, however, doesn’t end here.
Issue 2: Random restarts/reboots
This matter is also being actively discussed on Lenovo help forum (1,2) with K8 Note users sharing that both factory reset and reinstalling the Oreo update are a waste, as the reboots continue to persist. In fact, in some cases the devices are stuck in bootloops since the update.
Take a look at how some of the complainants word the issue:
There is a bug in Oreo update file. i installed it through OTA , the phone starts frequent reboot. i go to service centre and they again installed it through cable. just after login on play store it starts reboot.I tried in safe mode also but still the same problem happens. I also factory reset but no improvement. In recovery mode, it shows an error ” no command” .
What to do? the phone has become useless now. Plz come with new security update so that i can be able to use this phone. earlier in android 7 , it works fine.
I am facing the same restart problem after Oreo update few days back. Before update the phone was working and performing very well. I tried factory reset atleast 4-5 times but no luck. Facing the same restart problem again.
Mine too now I can’t even boot it its just showing lenovo logo and keeps restarting
It’s also worth mentioning that one of the users got the problem resolved after getting their device’s motherboard replaced.
I got my phone back from customer care. They changed the motherboard without any charges all done in warranty. Really satisfied with the customer service here in Kochi , Kerala. Runs Oreo now, without any heating issues nor any lag , feels smoother than nougat tbh. And fast charge works too.
But since we didn’t come across any other similar reports, it’s hard to say that this is the fix.
Coming to Lenovo’s take on the matter, all this while, experts on the forum have been suggesting the affected users to either factory reset or hard reset their affected unit, which unfortunately did not resolve the reboot/restart issues for majority users.
To sum it up, just like the company is investigating the device overheating/high CPU usage issues, we hope they look into the Oreo triggered restart/reboot problems as well. Like always, we are keeping an active tab on all possible sources, and will update the story as and when any further development takes place.
