New updates are being added at the bottom of this story……

Original story (published on November 28, 2020) follows:

Apple appears to have made an odd change in the way that senders’ names appear in the Apple Mail app for no apparent reason. The names now appear in reverse.

And you know what they say, “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.” The company could’ve easily avoided this matter had it paid attention to this cool little quote.

I have the same problem with the new 14.2 on my phone and iPad pro. More frustrating on the iPhone now that I constantly have to rotate the phone to see the “From” company’s complete or first name. It has made the titles of emails start with the end of the subject line appear as the first words on the line. Using the SE iPhone makes it more aggravating with a smaller screen. All I see are the last 2 words in a subject that has 4 or more words.

But they didn’t. And as a result, several annoyed users are now venting about the bug on official Apple forums.

In this issue, the senders’ names appear in a reversed form in the Apple Mail app. An example can be the mails from “Apple Support Community” that now display as “Communities Apple Support”, as shown in the below image.

Moreover, all reports have implied that this issue has only appeared after the iOS 14.2 update. The problem also isn’t just limited to iPhones as there are complaints from iPad users as well.

It is unclear as of now if the issue is truly due to the iOS 14.2 update, or if it is in fact a part of a buggy update released for the Apple Mail app. Hopefully, this ridiculous change isn’t deliberate.

Workaround for names displaying in reverse on Apple Mail

If you are one of the users facing this issue, then try the temporary solution given below.

If you are unable to perform the above workaround for some reason, then try heading over to Settings > Contacts > Display order, and change it to “first, last”.

Keep in mind though, that although this will help display sender names in Apple Mail in the correct order, it might reverse the names in your Contacts.

With that being said, let us know in the comments below if the above workarounds fixed the names displaying in reverse on Apple Mail for you. Hopefully, Apple will address the issue soon.

Update 1 (December 28)

Many users are now reporting that the issue has finally been fixed with the iOS 14.3 update even though the iOS 14.3 release notes haven’t mentioned anything as such.

Downloaded ios 14.3 which took a while. Setup contacts the way I like them. No more issue with my email display. FIXED. Thanks Apple.

Perhaps, the fix was included in the update as an under-the-hood change. Hence, if you are still facing this issue, chances are that you are on an older iOS version. Simply update to iOS 14.3 to make the problem disappear.
