Huawei Watch Magic August update brings AoD

Huawei had quite a turbulent Q2 2019 but this hasn’t stopped the Chinese company from delivering to its loyal customers like never before. Most devices have already received Android 9 Pie updates while others are swiftly switching to the newer EMUI 9.1 update.

Tomorrow, August 9, Huawei will hold an event during which it will unveil the new EMUI 10 based on the latest and greatest from Google, Android Q. This even beats the initial deadline of August 19 set by the U.S. government for American companies to find alternatives to doing business with Huawei.

The Chinese smartphone vendor has already provided an early list of Huawei and Honor devices that will be updated to EMUI 10, but there is still no clear timeline for the arrival of the new software. While we wait for Huawei to confirm the official dates, let’s talk smartwatch updates.

If you own the Huawei Watch Magic from late 2018, there is a new software update rolling out to the smartwatch. Surprisingly, some owners of the watch had given up on software updates but little did they know Huawei hadn’t.

The software is arriving as version 1.0.9.4 and weighs 5.4MB. Huawei has listed at least six changes the update brings to the watch, with the added Always on Display (AoD) as the major highlight:

• The update allows users to set a lock screen background and set the screen to always stay on or turn off at a scheduled time. These options can be found in System > Display > Advances settings.
• Adds a new feature that will turn off the screen when it is covered.
• Supports dual time zone display when using the Exercise rings or the 24-hour theme.
• Optimizes the triathlon interface.
• Optimizes workout and heart rate algorithms for more accurate calculations.
• Enhances system stability.

So far, UK dwellers have confirmed to have received the new software update on their Huawei Watch Magic smartwatch. The rollout is expected to spread to other regions where the watch is available in the coming days, so be sure to be patient. Here are some testimonies for you.

Nice update, watch seems a lot smoother, no stutter at all. Using the always on, will see what effect it has on life, it claims it will halve, I can easily believe that as the raise to wake halved life. I’m on 6 days between charges at the moment, I’ll see if that falls to 3.

While the Huawei Watch Magic August update is a joy for some, it doesn’t end the demand for more from owners of the smartwatch. There is a call for Huawei to include a couple more features.

This same update has also gotten users of other Huawei smartwatches salivating. One Huawei Watch GT user couldn’t resist anymore and eventually asked if these Watch Magic goodies will also make it to the Watch GT. Unfortunately, no concrete response has been given by Huawei thus far.

It’s worth noting that Huawei Watch Magic is receiving the latest update over the air (OTA). Typically, airborne updates may take a few days before all units get notified to download the software, so be cool if the notification hasn’t arrived on your watch yet.
