When it comes to buying a smartphone, some of my primary concerns are: how well did the OEM’s past products perform, what SoC, RAM and camera features the device offers, and what cover glass protection it comes bundled with.

Yeah, like some of you, I am the girl with the buttery hands, and my phone just loves to skid outta my hand. And knowing my juggling skills, my personal preference is Corning Gorilla Glass, the one that’s installed in most of the flagship phones these days.

Yesterday, while I was running through this year’s flagship phones – like Samsung S10/S10+, Huawei P30/P30 Pro, LG G8 ThinQ and Xiaomi Mi 9 – to come up with one particular name that I am going to purchase, my eyes somehow got stuck on Huawei’s P30/P30 Pro.

I simply loved the phone for its camera performance as well as the glossy finish in Aurora color, and straightaway knew that this is the one that I want, like for sure. Consequently, I started looking if the features that latest edition P30 Pro comes boxed with match my basic checklist.

But oddly, while I was going through Huawei P30 Pro’s specifications mentioned at Huawei’s official website, I couldn’t fine P30 Pro Gorilla Glass protection enlisted anywhere. In fact, there wasn’t any mention of the glass used on the phone.

Then I jumped to Huawei P30, to see if that comes with a Gorilla glass, but couldn’t find it mentioned there either. To end the confusion, I thought of verifying through Corning’s listing of Huawei phones that come with Gorilla Glass out of the box, and found Huawei P30 and P30 Pro missing there as well.

My interest in the beautiful looking P30/P30 Pro device got me to dig in deep to see if I was only one confused about whether or not the P30 series embrace Gorilla Glass or not.

I was relieved to see other users also inquiring about the same across the company’s official help forum as well as other social media platforms like Twitter.

Here’s what some users say at the official help forum:

Hi people, I’ve owned amazing phone p30 pro but am not sure about it has gorilla glass 6 or any other type because it’s expensive. Do any one have any idea?

Could you advise please if there is any screen protection like Gorilla Glass on P30 pro device?

And here are a couple of recent tweets with users inquiring about the same.

As far as we can see, not only Huawei, even device reviews conducted by some of the popular reviewers missed on highlighting this drawback of Huawei P30 Pro and P30.

For those of you not aware, let me shed some clarity on how Gorilla Glass is different from others. Apart from different chemical composition it is the drop test which defines the strength of a glass.

Corning claims that their 2018 Gorilla Glass 6 was good to go even after 15 drops form 1-meter height, while aluminosilicate and soda lime gave up after the first drop. Here’s what they say:

On average, in lab tests, Gorilla Glass 6 survived 15 drops from 1 meter onto rough surfaces, and is up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions, such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, did not survive the first drop.

Even other popular flagship devices such as Samsung Galaxy S10/S10+, OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi 9, all are shipped with Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Then why is the same not available on Huawei P30 and P30 Pro?

Forget the availability, what’s weird is that Huawei did not even bother to specify the change anywhere in the specifications of the phone on their website.

Coming to if not Gorilla Glass, then which glass screen is installed on Huawei P30/P30 Pro? It’s Aluminosilicate glass. The information came from Huawei while reverting back to one of the inquirers.

Please note that the glass material used for the P30 Pro is: aluminosilicate glass

Here’s the user shared screenshot of the response they got from Huawei:

It’s worth mentioning that if you take a look at Corning’s listing of Huawei devices that have Gorilla Glass, last year’s Huawei P20 is also not mentioned there, though its larger sibling P20 Pro is clearly mentioned. That means even P20 lacked Gorilla screen.

Looks like Huawei didn’t consider being vocal about the change in the glass screen being used on their devices as the concerned devices’ (i.e. P20/P20 Pro and P30/P30 Pro) specification section at their official website provides no information about the screen glass used.

So if you are looking for information on whether P30/P30 Pro has Gorilla Glass, then sadly, as mentioned above, they don’t, just like last year’s Huawei P20. Sad, but that’s how it stands.

P.S. Recently, we also highlighted the fingerprint sensor icon blinking glitch on Huawei P30 phones. Here’s a glimpse of the issue in question shared by one of the complainants.
