Android OEMs have improved tremendously across the board when it comes to pushing out updates to their devices. These updates range from regular monthly security patches, feature updates, or even whole OS upgrades.
Huawei for one has drastically changed the stereotype of Chinese devices not being updated as often as they should. Other Chinese OEMs like Realme have since followed suit and that is a sign of an ecosystem that is maturing nicely.
Huawei is today rolling out the April 2020 security patch update to a few of its devices. These include the Huawei Mate 20 X and the Honor 20. This update packs a few more improvements, most notable of them being that this update finally enables VoWiFi on these two devices.
VoWiFi or Voice Over WiFi is a new way of making phone calls where the call data is transmitted through an internet connection, much like Voice over LTE, only this time, the data is transmitted over a WiFi connection.
Many countries have rolled out VoWiFi extensively, especially India. Other OEMs like Realme have rolled out updates to enable this feature to all their devices. More on that here.
To recall, previously we had received reports that this update would roll out to the Honor 20 sometime in mid- May, and true to the company’s word, the update has started rolling out to some users. This update also brings with it Huawei Assistant & Smart Charge.
The Huawei Mate 20 X 4G is also getting an update that bumps up the Android security patch to April 2020. This update which bears software version number 10.0.0.200 (C00E74R2P8) also brings support for VoWiFi to this device.
With these updates, these two devices join the growing list of Huawei and Honor devices that now support VoWiFi. At the time of writing, these include;
– Honor View 10 (V10)
– Honor View 20
– Honor 9 Lite
– Honor 9N
– Honor Play
– Honor 20i
– Honor 8X
– Honor 10 Lite
We shall keep an eye on this story and update as more and more devices get updated to take advantage of VoWiFi.
