Hogwarts Legacy 'restricted name' bug finally acknowledged, but there's no ETA for a fix

Warner Bros. Games has successfully recreated the magic of the Harry Potter franchise in the Hogwarts Legacy game. The company has sold over 12 million copies of the game just within the first two weeks of its launch.

However, some bugs and issues spoil the gameplay experience for several players, time and again. For instance, we recently covered an issue where the ‘Field Guides’ were stuck at 33/34 or not appearing in some zones.

Now, some gamers are disappointed as they have not been able to input their real name in the game’s profile.

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple players have an issue where they can’t enter their real name in the game profile. It is alleged that the restrictive word filter is extremely strict and flags most real names.

The issue has been persistent since the game’s launch, and due to this, players have to use fictitious names on their profiles. They are unhappy about this and have taken to the web forums to express their disappointment.

A player on the Hogwarts Legacy support forum complains that no matter what name they put in, they always get the ‘contains restricted words’ error message.

Insane that people with legit last names containing ‘hell’ or ‘poo’ are getting blocked while Percival Powerbottom is freely running around Hogwarts. It’s a single player game, there’s no need for this in the first place.

Some have even questioned the need of policing one’s name choices in a single-player-only game.

Gamers have even tried to put in names from the Harry Potter universe, but even those are inexplicably restricted.

Fortunately, the WB Games Support team on Twitter has officially acknowledged the issue and is currently investigating it. Although no official ETA for the bug fix has been provided.

We did come across a potential workaround that may help solve your problem. A player on Reddit recommends using a savegame editor to edit your profile name.
