Google’s ARCore is a platform for building augmented reality experiences. If you’re aware of Apple’s ARKit, you can think of Google’s platform as an answer to that. Currently, ARCore is available on a wide variety of Android smartphones – you can find the complete list here.
If you follow augmented reality-related news closely, you’d likely be aware that the latest, 1.3 version of ARCore hints at upcoming support for various other Android devices. But neither the official list, nor the rumored list includes OnePlus 6, which is one of the hottest smartphones in the market today.
So it’d be correct to say the OnePlus 6 is incompatible with Google’s augmented reality platform at the moment, right? Well, not quite. Reason being, I got it working on my OnePlus 6 unit. Here’s how:
Of course, as the OnePlus 6 isn’t currently in the official ARCore-compatible devices list, you can’t install the ARCore app from the Play Store. But that doesn’t mean you’re completely out of luck. What I mean is, you can grab the app from APKMirror, and install it by providing required permissions.
Once you’re done installing ARCore, you can download and install another app that lets you take advantage of the feature. For example, I downloaded Just a line from APKMirror.
And there you go, I was able to experience augmented reality on my OnePlus 6. Following is a video that I made using the Just a line app (sorry for the amateurish clip).
Of course, there may be some kinks to iron out because of which Google hasn’t made the support official yet. But what matters is the company’s augmented reality platform is working on OnePlus’ latest smartphone, and that’s good news for users of the device.
