Update (June 26):

The random reboot issue has been fixed with a new update. More information here.

Original story:

The Nokia brand under HMD seems to be headed towards the path of growth. Handsets are being lapped up by users quickly, and updates are being pushed out on time. However, as with any company in the smartpone industry, the problem of updates causing serious issues is plaguing Nokia phones as well.

Case in point: random reboots on Nokia 5.1 since the May security update. Yes, ever since the May update, a lot of Nokia 6.1 users have been reporting crashes (random reboots) with their Android One devices.

Same here. Gone from perfect phone (for me) to almost being unusable – can I rely on the alarm to wake me up?. Restarted several times yesterday, and then once driving to the gym and 6 times within 40 mins on my drive to work today. There does not seem to be any pattern to it.

Complainants in large numbers have flocked the company’s official online user forum to discuss the matter. Based on reports, it looks like the problem has something to do with location services and 4G. While many users say disabling location services stopped random reboots for them, there have also been reports that switching LTE off did the trick.

Turning off EITHER GPS or LTE makes the phone run stable. It looks like it is a LTE Bug. If the LTE Signal gets weaker the phone go to a panic state and shuts down. i deactivated LTE and now the phone runs without any crash. of course this is a temporary fix.

Of course, none of these workarounds is an acceptable, long term fix. It’s worth mentioning that the problem is quite widespread, with reporting pouring in from Asia, Europe, and even Australia.

A forum moderator Laura was quick to acknowledge the problem initially:

Just to give you a short update – the problem is under investigation and has high priority. I don’t have a fix time for an update, but I’ll let you all know when I have new info on that

And some time back, they confirmed a fix for the issue has been included in the June security update.

I got the info we started to roll out an OTA update today which should fix this problem

The June security update is out… but as every update it might take some time to reach you depending on area, carrier and so on… I’m very sorry for the inconvenience and that you have to wait for so long

The problem now is not many Nokia 6.1 users have received the June update (which – according to Nokia support – was released on June 13), and sadly, those who did get it say the issue persists.

i have the update on my phone since Thursday and the phone restarted automatically twice in four days. while it looks to be a lot better than we had to deal with the last couple of weeks, the problem is definitely not fixed

Have you received the update on your unit? What has your experience been so far? Did you face random reboots again? Let us know in comments below. Oh, and yes, you can access all user complaints related to this issue here.
