[Updated] Google starts reinvestigating Pixel 2 MMS/group message issue

Update (May 17):

At least one user who is currently on Android P beta and running Android Messages app’s latest version 3.2.039 (APKMirror) recently confirmed that the MMS glitch has been resolved for them.

For what it’s worth, since the upgrade to both P preview and Messages 3.2.039…..I’ve not gotten the error. I just sent 11 MMS messages to my Pixel 2 XL from my work phone (iPhone) and had 100% success.

Update (April 18):

One of the Google employees updated on the matter this morning that a fix should be rolling out in days to come.

We are working on a fix to the issue, which we should have in the coming days. For users that are impacted, this issue affects the messaging database, which in turn impacts the ability to reliably receive Group MMS messages. We’ll post another update once a fix is available.

A couple of weeks back we pointed out that the fix released by Google did not cure the MMS/group message glitch from root, as Pixel 2 and 2 XL users never stopped complaining. And now we have a good news – the company is looking into the matter again.

For a quick refresher, in the beginning of March (this year) we highlighted a Pixel 2-related problem, wherein users complained of issues while sending or receiving MMS or group messages using the in-built messaging app, irrespective of the carrier they operated on.

As already mentioned in the beginning, Google quickly jumped into action, fixing the glitch. But things didn’t turn up as expected. Considering that, they are once again looking for the loop holes to fasten the latch.

A Google employee broke the aforementioned news this morning to pacify those affected saying

Although text message issues should already be resolved for some of you, we’ve heard the feedback that this is still a problem for some of you. We’re still investigating this issue with AT&T for those affected, and we’ll post updates here when we know more.

It’s worth mentioning that a quick look at the relevant thread confirms the problem is not limited to Pixel 2 users on AT&T network only, as those on Cricket, T-Mobile and Verizon also report of encountering the same. But there is lack of clarity on why is Google currently investigating the matter with At&T (as mentioned in their latest statement).

Whatever the case, it’s relieving that they are at least looking into the MMS/group message problem again. We hope they figure out the cause as well as come up with a fix soon. Meanwhile, we are keeping a close watch on all related developments and will update as and when anything news worthy shows up.
