New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on April 19, 2021) follows:

Google Pay was formerly known as Tez in India. It operates atop the revolutionary Unified Payments Interface, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India. It can be used wherever UPI payments are accepted.

The app is immensely popular on both iOS and Android and has over 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store. This is even greater than the government-backed BHIM app itself.

And if an app with a huge number of users happens to have any issue, plenty are going to be affected. Speaking of which, there are several complaints doing rounds recently stating that the Google Pay app is not working.

Upon investigation, most of the complaints [1, 2, 3, 4] seem to be regarding failed verification on Google Pay. Users state that they’re unable to set up their Google Pay account following a re-install.

This is because the step that involves adding a bank account fails due to the OTP not getting received, which effectively renders the GPay app useless.

Additionally, there have also been several complaints stating that a “Please exit any app that might be drawing over the screen and try again” error prevents them from using the app.

For the “drawing over the screen” error, it is recommended to ensure that there is no other app running with an overlay on the screen. If there isn’t, then try rebooting your device.

And lastly, there have also been a few complaints regarding transactions wherein a completed transaction fails to show up on the ‘All transactions’ list on Google Pay.

If you are one of the users facing any of the aforementioned issues recently, then worry not, for Google has admitted that there is an issue at their end and that a fix is in the works already.

Therefore, if all goes well, the Google Pay not working issue should be resolved either through a server-side fix or through an app update. For now, stay tuned to PiunikaWeb.

Update 1 (April 20)

11:23 am (IST): A new workaround has now been suggested for the “drawing over the screen” error by Google Pay themselves:

Let’s give these steps a try: Open settings on your phone – Apps – Draw over other apps – Disable permissions. Restart the phone after completing the steps.

Update 2 (April 21)

13:55 pm (IST): Following is a user-shared video showcasing how to disable permissions to get rid of the GPay error in question that is coming because of some of the apps installed on your unit.

Update 3 (April 22)

12:55 pm (IST): In case the workaround share by support doesn’t help, one option you have is to revert to the older version by uninstalling the latest update. This resolves the issue, as has been confirmed by a user:

I did everything every setting it’s doesn’t work for that. And later on I unistalled the update. Now it’s working on old version of google pay. Please roll out the stable update. This time update is full on bugs regarding this issue. I hope you understand the situation
